Enhancements to JIMMER in release 1.3
─────────────────────────────────────
-JIMMER now updates the date received field in the RBBS message
header so you know if and when your messages have been received.
JIMMER also sends the single byte "flag" in the .QWK packet for
every message so you know if the message was 'public', 'public
and received', 'private', or 'private and received'.
-JIMMER now supports DORINFOx.DEF for x = 0,...,9,A,...,Z.
-JIMMER now sets a date next to the bulletin [y/n], news file [y/n], or new
files [y/n] as the "threshold" date for classification as "new". This is
how far back in time JIMMER will consider a file (or bulletin, etc) to be
downloaded if you toggle on the options "B", "N", or "F". Use the "*) Set
Date" option to set the date.
-Users may now download from the door even if there is no new mail or no
conferences have been selected. Previous releases of JIMMER had not
allowed a download unless there were one or more messages found to
download. This allows the user to retrieve only bulletins, news items, or
new files descriptions. There is a prompt, however, which asks the user
if the no-mail-download is really desired.
-There is now more extensive logging to JIMMER.LOG such as:
TOM WILSON entered JIMMER (tm) DOOR release 1.3 at 20:39:08 on 04-12-1991
---Recalled PASSWORD from file
---Recalled PROFILE
---Selected CONFERENCES
---Saved PROFILE
---Downloaded MAIL
---19 messages exported from MAIN
---5 messages exported from BBSTALK
---12 messages exported from RBBS
---20 messages exported from FISHING
---FILE list sent
---NEWS file sent
---Updated HIGH message pointer
---LOOKING for new mail
---Uploaded MAIL
---5 messages imported to BBSTALK
---3 messages imported to MAIN
TOM WILSON exited JIMMER (tm) DOOR release 1.3 at 20:40:12 on 04-12-1991
-The number of lines displayed in text listings such as the on-line help or
the list of files shown when "looking for new messages" is now
configurable. See the upgrade notes below for config file changes.
-The FMS search is improved...thanks Michael Lurie! Prior versions were
only including the first 77 characters of the directory entry.
In addition, there are 2 options available depending on how you have
FMS set up. See the upgrade notes below.
-I have compacted slightly the PROFILE file. Mine has 20 users in it
and it went from 83200 bytes to 52800 bytes. I know that isn't major,
but at least there isn't wasted space in there anymore. I had received
a couple of concerned messages about the size of the file.
-The "last on date and time" in the user's record for each sub-board
is now updated to the current time each time the high message pointer
is updated. Prior versions of JIMMER did not do this and it was
possible if all the user did was enter MAIN and access sub-boards
via the door that over time the "last on" date would get old enough
to cause the user to be purged if the sysop was using a old user purge
utility.
-The "PR" and "PS" commands are no longer supported.
-I have designed a faster search for message downloading. Previous
releases of JIMMER looked record-by-record through the messages
files until it found the message number since your last mail read.
Now JIMMER uses a binary search. On my system, through a LANtastic
2 MBPS network, I wait between 1 and 4 seconds before the new mail
is written to disk. The 4 second extreme was on a 1 megabyte message
file. There is no change needed in your JIMMER setup to enable this
feature.
-The path to DORINFOx.DEF is now in JIMMER.CFG. The benefit of this
config item is that Sysops no longer need to copy the file to the JIMMER
directory.
-The list presented when "looking for new mail" is now in 3 columns
so you are able to cover more conferences in a single 'page' of displayed
text.
-I now optionally log to the RBBS "CALLERS" file. This prevents 'holes'
in the file when users drop carrier. JIMMER will append the file with
and entry like the following:
TOM WILSON on at 05-11-91, 7:30 PM from SANTA ROSA, CA, 2400 BAUD,
N,8,1 {TOM WILSON/}
Logged off at 09:15 AM
You can disable this function if you don't want JIMMER messing with
your CALLERS file....see below.
-When ANSI is turned on (color menus are active) you will now see a
flashing asterisk if JIMMER finds personal mail while download mail
from a particular conference. Look for the asterisk next to the
twirling "/".
-Colors in the menus may now be toggled as highlighted (high intensity)
or not highlighted (normal intensity). The default when selecting
colors is high intensity.

Upgrading to JIMMER 1.3
───────────────────────
-Remove the JIMMER.CFG entry "DV=N" or "DV=Y". JIMMER now gets this info
from DORINFOx.DEF.
-YOU MUST RUN PRONEW.EXE. Read PRONEW.DOC in this archive.
-Enter a parameter "NC=x" at the last line of JIMMER.CFG where "x" is
the column number of the date in a header for each news item.

└─typical news file ends here...
In my JIMMER.CFG, I have the entry "NC=6" since the date in my news file
ALWAYS starts in column 6. You don't include the quotes around the NC=6!
The date must be in the format MM-DD-YY. If you coincidentally have text
with the body of the news item with a date in this format, you will likely
end the news item listing if the date is older than the "set date".
If you don't like this restriction, enter "NC=-1" and JIMMER will send the
whole file as it always has.
-Enter a parameter at the last line of JIMMER.CFG for the number of
lines displayed in the online help, when looking for new mail, etc.
I use 24.
-Enter a parameter at the last line of JIMMER.CFG which states whether or
not your FMS entries are chronologically sorted or alphabetically sorted.
Use "FMS=CRON" if your FMS is chronologically sorted. Use "FMS=ALPH" if
your FMS is alphabetically sorted. Prior versions of JIMMER 'assumed'
chronological sorting and therefore, the DOOR would stop looking for file
descriptions as soon as it found a file older than the 'set date'. That
is still the case if you use "FMS=CRON", but if you choose to use
"FMS=ALPH", then the whole chain of FMS directories will be searched.
This takes longer, but is more complete for alphabetized listings.
-Enter a parameter at the last line of JIMMER.CFG which is the drive and
path name to the DORINFOx.DEF file for JIMMER. On my system, it is
"C:\RBBS\", in yours it may be different. It is no longer necessary to
copy your DORINFOx.DEF file to the JIMMER directory.
-Insert a new entry in the 3rd line of JIMMER.CFG. This will display all
entries from the old line 3 on down one position lower in the file. The new
entry is the full drive/path/filename to node's RBBS CALLERS file. Mine
is: C:\RBBS\CALLERS. If you don't want JIMMER to log to your CALLERS file
in the event of a dropped carrier, simply use the drive/path/filename of
"NOLOG". This tells JIMMER to keep its hands off. Read JIMMER.DOC for
more information about this feature.
